Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Yesterday, we covered the physical mechanics of securing vertically staged sheet goods and round stock. Today, we turn to a daily jobsite logistics issue that directly impacts emergency response and worker movement: Access Corridors, Means of Egress, and Designated Staging Zones. As trade contractors compete for space on a crowded building pad, material pallets, conduit crates, and scrap boxes routinely overflow out of laydown areas and bleed directly into primary walkways, stairwells, and exit corridors. Blocking egress routes transforms a simple material staging convenience into a major fire, trip, and evacuation hazard.
The Domino Effect of Staging Encroachment
When material storage creeps into active walkways, it creates secondary hazards that compound risk across the entire project:
Blocked Emergency Egress: In the event of a fire, arc flash, gas leak, or severe weather warning, workers must be able to evacuate immediately without navigating a obstacle course. Staging materials in stairwells, doorways, or designated exit corridors directly violates life safety standards and slows emergency response times.
Trip and Fall Hazards: Loose materials, banding straps, pallet corners, and extension cords extending out from a staging pile into a dark or dusty gangway invite severe trip and fall injuries.
Restricted Material Transport: When access corridors are narrowed by staging overflow, workers operating pallet jacks, motorized carts, or carrying heavy tools are forced to squeeze past obstacles. This increases the likelihood of striking standing materials, triggering a collapse or pinch-point injury.
The Clear Width Standard: OSHA standards require that all designated means of egress be kept entirely unobstructed and clear of materials, equipment, and debris at all times. A hallway or gangway marked as an emergency exit path must maintain its full, rated width from floor to ceiling.
Laydown Rules: Staging vs. Access
To maintain clean site logistics, field supervisors must enforce a strict boundary between active work/storage areas and egress paths:

Implementation: Clearing Egress Paths Today
Before crews begin staging daily deliveries or moving material through interior corridors this morning:
Walk Your Primary Egress Routes: Inspect main corridors, stairwells, and door frames leading to exits. Clear out any pallet corners, conduit crates, or trash hoppers parked in emergency travel paths.
Enforce Laydown Zone Boundaries: Verify that incoming trade deliveries are dropped strictly within marked laydown areas—not dropped "temporarily" in a doorway or main gangway.
Clear Scrap Continuously: Require trades to clean up banding, cutoffs, and empty pallets as material is consumed. Leaving scrap piled in gangways until the end of the shift creates unnecessary trip hazards all day long.
