Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Yesterday, we established why operating a Class VII rough-terrain telehandler requires specialized training and site-specific authorization. Today, we dive into the fundamental physics that govern every lift: Center of Gravity, the Stability Triangle, and Navigating Telehandler Load Capacity Charts. Unlike standard vehicles, a telehandler’s center of gravity shifts constantly as you tilt, raise, or extend the boom. Ignoring capacity limits or miscalculating a reach radius can cause a 20,000-pound machine to flip forward or roll sideways in a fraction of a second.
The Physics of Telehandler Stability
Understanding telehandler stability requires picturing how weight moves inside the machine as the boom extends:
The Stability Triangle: All three-point and four-point suspension forklifts rely on an internal "stability triangle" formed between the front drive axle wheels and the center pivot of the rear steering axle. To keep the machine upright, the combined center of gravity (the vehicle weight plus the payload) must stay strictly inside this triangle.
Boom Leverage and Combined Center of Gravity: As you pick up a pallet of brick, the combined center of gravity moves forward toward the front axle. As you telescope the boom outward, that center of gravity moves even further forward. If the load exceeds the rated capacity for that distance, the center of gravity moves past the front axle pivot point, causing the rear tires to lift and tipping the machine forward.
The Danger of Frame Leveling at Height: Telehandlers feature frame-leveling (sway) hydraulics to level the chassis on uneven ground. However, frame leveling must only be adjusted when the boom is fully retracted and lowered. Activating frame sway with an elevated load shifts the combined center of gravity outside the lateral sides of the stability triangle, causing an immediate sideways rollover.
The Telescoping Golden Rule: Boom extension acts as a force multiplier. A load that is perfectly safe to hold 5 feet in front of the machine can instantly tip the telehandler if extended 20 feet out without checking the capacity chart first.
Reading and Utilizing the Load Capacity Chart
Every telehandler cab is equipped with a durable, machine-specific load capacity chart mounted directly within the operator's line of sight. Never guess a machine's capacity based on feel:
Boom Angle and Extension Indicators: Look out the cab window at the boom. Telehandlers feature a boom angle indicator on the side of the main section and lettered/numbered zone markers along the telescoping sections to tell you your exact boom angle and extension length.
Matching Distance to Capacity: Find the boom angle line on the chart's grid and follow it to the corresponding extension letter or radius distance. The number inside that grid sector represents the absolute maximum weight you can safely lift at that exact position.
Factoring Attachment Weight: Standard load charts are calibrated for standard fork carriages. If you swap forks for a truss boom, material bucket, or wide masonry carriage, you must use the specific chart for that attachment or deduct the extra attachment weight from the total allowable payload.
Implementation: Verifying Your Lift Geometry Today
Before picking up a load or extending your boom toward a scaffold deck today:
Know Your Load Weight: Verify the actual weight of the material bundle or pallet before lifting. Look at shipping tickets, material tags, or ask the site supervisor—never estimate weight by eye.
Level the Frame Before Raising the Boom: Park on solid ground, place the transmission in neutral, and adjust your frame-leveling control until the chassis bubble level is centered before raising or extending the boom.
Check the Grid Sector: Match your intended landing height and extension distance on the cab’s load chart. Confirm that your payload weight is below the rated limit for that specific zone before telescoping outward.
