Today, we focus on safe jobsite housekeeping: Chemical Storage, Secondary Containers, and Compatibility. Storing chemicals improperly—or mixing incompatible products—is a leading cause of jobsite fires, sudden toxic gas releases, and severe container failures. Proper storage requires managing flammables, maintaining adequate ventilation, and enforcing strict container transfer discipline.
Critical Chemical Storage and Compatibility Hazards
Many companies treat chemical storage as an afterthought, stacking cans in a tool trailer or placing solvents on open wooden shelving. Improper storage creates major site risks:
Incompatible Chemical Reactions: Storing oxidizers next to flammable solvents, or acids near bases, creates extreme risks of violent chemical reactions, fires, or toxic vapors if containers leak.
Improper Flammable Liquid Storage: Storing fuels, aerosol paints, or solvents in standard plastic jugs or open buckets rather than approved safety cans or dedicated flammables storage cabinets creates an immediate fire hazard.
Vapor Accumulation in Enclosed Spaces: Volatile chemicals stored in unventilated gang boxes, tool trailers, or storage closets off-gas into confined areas, creating explosive atmospheres or severe inhalation hazards when opened.
Degradation of Unlabeled Secondary Containers: Transferring chemicals into unrated secondary containers—such as plastic water bottles or unlined metal cans—can cause the container material to dissolve, resulting in leaks or accidental ingestion.
The Compatibility Rule: Never store chemicals alphabetically or by brand name. Chemicals must always be stored by their hazard class (flammables, oxidizers, corrosives, toxics) to prevent dangerous cross-reactions during leaks or spills.
Storage Standards and Secondary Container Protocols
To ensure safe storage and transfer of chemical products across the jobsite:
Use Approved Safety Cans: All flammable liquids transferred on site must be handled in self-closing, pressure-relieving safety cans equipped with intact flame arrestors.
Utilize Dedicated Flammables Cabinets: Flammable liquids stored indoors or in job trailers must be kept inside yellow, fire-rated flammables storage cabinets with double-walled construction and self-closing doors.
Enforce Complete Secondary Labeling: Any secondary container used to store or transport a chemical off the main supply area must be labeled with the product name and primary hazard warnings.
Maintain Clear Ventilation: Ensure chemical storage bays and flammable cabinets are located in well-ventilated areas, away from ignition sources, heat, and direct sunlight.
Implementation: Auditing Your Chemical Storage Today
Before opening tool trailers, gang boxes, or chemical storage bays today:
Inspect Safety Can Flame Arrestors: Check every fuel and solvent safety can. Verify that the wire mesh flame arrestor inside the spout is clean, intact, and free of tears or punctures.
Separate Incompatible Materials: Audit your storage areas. Ensure acids, bases, flammables, and oxidizers are separated by physical barriers or distinct storage bays.
Check Flammable Cabinet Doors: Confirm that all jobsite flammables cabinets are clean, properly latched, and kept closed when not actively removing materials.
