Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! We are wrapping up our week on All-Terrain Forklifts and Telehandlers by focusing on the highest-risk operations performed at height: Elevated Material Landing, Suspended Load Security, and Personnel Platform Discipline. Extending a multi-ton boom to land a 3,000-pound pallet onto a third-story scaffold deck or upper slab exposes the jobsite to severe falling-object and structural collapse hazards. Furthermore, using telehandlers to hoist personnel requires strict adherence to OSHA rules to prevent catastrophic falls. Completing elevated lifts safely demands rigorous pre-lift checks, complete fall arrest integration, and zero tolerance for makeshift hoisting setups.
Strict Discipline for Personnel Lifting and Work Platforms
Using a telehandler to elevate workers is strictly regulated. Improperly lifting crew members on bare forks or improvised pallets is one of the most common causes of fatal jobsite falls:
Approved Personnel Platforms Only: Workers must never stand on the forks, on top of a pallet, or inside a material bucket. Personnel can only be elevated inside an engineer-designed, commercially manufactured work platform (basket) specifically approved for that telehandler make and model.
Platform Attachment and Capacity Limits: The personnel platform must be securely mechanical-locked to the fork carriage and retain safety pins to prevent accidental dislodgement. The combined weight of workers, tools, and materials inside the basket must stay below 18% of the telehandler’s maximum rated capacity at that extension radius.
100% Fall Arrest Integration: Every worker elevated inside an approved personnel platform must wear a full-body harness attached to an engineered, designated anchor point inside the basket—never to the telehandler boom or surrounding building structure.
Cab Operator Requirements: When workers are elevated in a basket, a trained operator must remain at the primary controls in the cab at all times. The transmission must be locked in neutral with the parking brake fully set.
The Material vs. Personnel Rule: Material handling attachments (forks, truss booms) are engineered strictly for dead weight. Never use material forks to lift people, and never use a personnel basket as a crane bucket to haul loose rubble or bulk framing materials.
Securing Elevated Material Loads and Landing Zones
Landing heavy loads on scaffolds, elevated decks, or roof structures introduces extreme dynamic forces and struck-by hazards:
Verify Landing Deck Capacity: Before hoisting a load to an upper floor, scaffold frame, or roof deck, confirm with the site supervisor or structural drawings that the receiving surface is rated to hold the concentrated weight of the material package.
Secure Bundles Against Wind and Slippage: Loose lumber, sheetrock, roofing tin, and insulation bundles can catch wind gusts mid-air or slide off tilted forks. Always secure split or loose bundles with heavy-duty banding or tie-down straps before elevating the boom.
Smooth Boom Controls and Landing Protocols: Never extend or retract the boom abruptly. Sudden hydraulic movements cause load bounce, creating severe dynamic shock loads that can buckle scaffold frames or tip the machine. Land the payload completely, ensure it is stable, and lower the forks slightly before backing the boom away.
Implementation: The Friday Elevated Lift Checklist
Before hoisting materials to height or setting up an approved personnel platform today:
Inspect Platform Anchorage: If elevating personnel today, verify that the work platform is factory-certified, pinned securely to the carriage, and that all lanyard attachment points are clean and undamaged.
Clear and Barricade the Drop Zone: Establish a rigid drop-zone perimeter directly beneath the elevated boom and landing area using yellow or red warning tape to keep ground crews clear of potential falling debris.
Confirm Smooth Hydraulic Operation: Test boom lift, telescope, and tilt functions at ground level before lifting heavy payloads or personnel to ensure hydraulics operate smoothly without binding or chattering.
