Fall Protection Friday: Fire's Impact on Structures

This Weeks Toolbox Talk Attached Below!

Welcome back, let's Build Smart & Build Safe! We've spent this week on fire prevention. Today, on Fall Protection Friday, we're connecting fire safety to the most common cause of fatalities in construction: falls.

Fire doesn't just burn; it can weaken and destroy the very structures we work on, turning a stable work surface into a deadly fall hazard.

The Two-Part Fall Hazard

  1. Structural Collapse: A fire, even a small one, can compromise the integrity of a structure.

    • Scaffolding: Heat can weaken a scaffold's metal components or burn through wooden planks, causing a sudden collapse.

    • Roofs and Floors: Fire can burn through a roof or floor, creating an unplanned opening and causing a worker to fall to the level below.

  2. Emergency Evacuation: The panic and disorientation of a fire can lead to dangerous decisions.

    • Unsafe Escape Routes: A worker might attempt to escape a fire by climbing onto an unstable surface, a ladder that has been weakened by heat, or through a section of a roof that is already compromised.

    • Secondary Falls: The heat, smoke, and general chaos of a fire can cause a worker to lose their footing and fall, even if the structure itself has not failed yet.

Your Plan for Safety

The safest plan is to prevent a fire from ever starting. But if a fire does occur, remember these two rules:

  • Assume Damage: Never assume a structure, scaffold, or ladder is safe after a fire has been present. Treat it as compromised until it can be inspected by a qualified person.

  • Stick to the Plan: In an emergency, your immediate goal is to get out safely. Do not deviate from the known evacuation route, and never re-enter a fire-damaged building, even if it looks safe from the outside.

A fire can destroy a work surface in seconds. Your awareness of these hidden dangers is what keeps you safe.
