Fall Protection Friday: Heightened Energy
This Week’s Toolbox Talk Attached Below!
Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! We are wrapping up our LOTO week by talking about a type of power that doesn't come from a wire or a pipe: Gravity. Many treat Lockout/Tagout like it’s only for electricians or mechanics. But if you work at height, or if you work under anything that is raised, you are dealing with "Heightened Energy." Today, we cover the "Block It or Drop It" rule to ensure that gravity doesn't become a killer.
Gravity is Stored Energy
When a heavy load is lifted—whether it’s a pre-cast concrete slab, a dump truck bed, or a lift platform—it is "storing" energy. If the hydraulic fluid leaks or a cable snaps, gravity will instantly convert that stored energy into a crushing force.
The Hydraulic Myth: Never trust a hydraulic cylinder to hold a load while you work under it. Hydraulics can fail silently and instantly. A lock on the control switch doesn't stop a cylinder from leaking.
The "Suspended Load" Hazard: If a crane or a forklift has a load in the air, that load is "energized" by gravity. Walking under it is exactly like walking into a live circuit.
Mechanical Blocking: In LOTO, we don't just "lock" the switch; we "block" the movement. This means using physical stands, timber cribbing, or safety pins to ensure that even if the system fails, the equipment cannot fall.
The "Block It or Drop It" Rule
Before anyone places their body under a raised piece of equipment or a suspended component, one of two things must happen:
Drop It: The load is lowered all the way to the ground so that it has zero potential energy. This is the safest way to work.
Block It: If the load must stay up, it is secured with rated mechanical stands or blocks that are designed to hold the full weight. We "Zero Out" the gravity by transferring the weight from the machine to the blocks.
Implementation: Ending the Week Safely
As we head into the weekend, apply these "Gravity LOTO" principles to your final tasks:
Lower All Attachments: Before you walk away from a skid steer, forklift, or excavator today, drop the bucket or the forks flat to the ground. Don't leave them "stored" in the air where they are a hazard to anyone walking by.
Inspect the Cribbing: If you are working on a site where equipment is blocked up, inspect those blocks. Are they stable? Are they on a firm foundation? If the ground is soft from rain, those blocks could shift.
The "Under-Reach" Check: Never reach your arm or head under a raised component to "just check a serial number" or "grab a dropped tool." If it isn't blocked, it isn't safe.
