Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! We are wrapping up Weather Extremes week by examining how environmental hazards directly compromise Fall Protection Systems. In clean conditions, personal fall arrest equipment and perimeter guardrails are straightforward to rely on. But when environmental factors—like heavy morning dew, sudden downpours, high wind gusts, or long-term UV exposure—enter the mix, the entire safety margin changes. Today, we break down how severe weather degrades both your footing and your gear, and why environmental checks must be part of every tie-off decision.
Environmental Degradation of Footing and Gear
Environmental factors attack fall protection from two sides: reducing the traction under your boots and silently weakening the synthetic materials keeping you attached to the structure.
Traction Loss and Increased Fall Energy: A wet concrete slab, a rain-slicked steel beam, or a sloped roof covered in morning frost slashes your boot's coefficient of friction by over 50%. A sudden slip on a slick surface generates fast, lateral momentum before a worker even realizes they are falling. That extra momentum translates to higher impact forces when the lanyard catches, putting maximum strain on your anchor point.
The "Wind-Sway" Factor: Strong wind gusts on upper decks create continuous lateral pressure on a worker's body. If a gust hits while a worker is stepping over an obstacle or working near an open leading edge, the force can easily throw them off balance.
Environmental Degradation of Webbing: Synthetic harnesses and web lanyards suffer severe damage from environmental exposure. Prolonged UV exposure from intense sunlight breaks down the polymer chains, leading to "UV dry-rot" where the webbing becomes stiff, faded, and brittle. Furthermore, dirt, mud, and water forced into the weave can grind against internal fibers, weakening the strap from the inside out.
Inspecting Gear and Adjusting Tie-Offs for Weather
When environmental conditions sour, standard fall protection procedures must adapt to compensate for the higher risks:
Account for Increased Arrest Distance: On slick or wet surfaces, expect longer slide distances before a fall arrest system fully engages. Keep your anchor point overhead whenever possible to minimize free-fall distance and swing hazards.
Inspect Webbing for Environmental Stress: Never use a harness or lanyard that has been left sitting out in direct sunlight, mud, or standing water for days. Bend the webbing into an "U" shape to check for cracking, stiffness, or discoloration caused by UV rot or chemical exposure.
Clean and Dry Gear Properly: If your fall protection gear gets soaked during a storm, do not dry it with a heat gun or throw it in direct sunlight. Hang it to air-dry in a cool, ventilated space. Heat and harsh conditions ruin synthetic elasticity.
Implementation: The Weather-Adjusted Fall Check
Before stepping onto open decks, roof slopes, or scaffolding perimeter lines this morning:
Audit Deck Traction: Walk your path before carrying tools or materials. If morning dew or rainwater has made the slab or steel slick, apply traction material, sweep off standing water, or hold off on high-risk perimeter work until the deck dries.
Check Lanyard Elasticity: Inspect your shock-absorbing lanyards and SRLs for stiff spots, severe mud buildup, or fabric discoloration. If the webbing feels brittle or plastic-like from UV exposure, remove it from service immediately.
Maintain Overhead Anchors: Ensure your lanyard anchor is secured above shoulder height to limit free-fall distance. On a slick deck, an anchor set at foot level allows too much downward acceleration before the shock absorber deploys.
