Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Today we launch our week on Hazard Identification and Pre-Task Planning. Every incident on a jobsite begins with a hazard that was either unnoticed, ignored, or accepted as "normal." Construction environments change constantly—what was a clear walkway yesterday can become an open trench or an energized work zone today. Developing sharp hazard identification skills means training your eye to spot dangers before they lead to an injury. We start by focusing on the four hazards responsible for the vast majority of serious construction injuries and fatalities: The OSHA Focus Four.

Breaking Down the Focus Four Hazards

Recognizing hazards starts with understanding the primary ways workers get hurt on construction sites:

  • Falls: The leading cause of fatalities in construction. Fall hazards include unprotected slab edges, uncovered floor holes, improperly secured ladders, incomplete scaffolding, and weak roof decking.

  • Struck-By Hazards: Injuries caused by forcible contact between a worker and an object or piece of equipment. Examples include swinging excavator buckets, dropped tools from upper levels, backing haul trucks, or flying debris during demolition or grinding.

  • Caught-In or Between: Hazards where a worker is crushed, squeezed, or compressed between objects. Common examples include trench cave-ins, unguarded rotating shafts, pinch points on heavy machinery, or being pinned between a wall and an aerial lift basket.

  • Electrocution: Exposure to lethal electrical energy. Primary risks involve overhead power line contact with cranes or ladders, damaged extension cords, ungrounded temporary power boxes, and working on energized panels without proper lockout protocols.

The Normalization Reality: The greatest obstacle to hazard identification is "hazard normalization"—becoming so accustomed to a dangerous condition, like an exposed cable or a missing guardrail, that you stop seeing it as a threat.

The Three-Step Hazard Identification Mindset

Before pulling a trigger on a tool or stepping into a work zone, apply a three-step evaluation to your surrounding area:

  • Look Up: Check for overhead power lines, suspended crane loads, unbacked decking, or trades working directly above you without toe-boards or tool tethers.

  • Look Down: Inspect ground stability, open floor penetrations, extension cords in walking paths, slip hazards, or unmarked trench edges.

  • Look Around: Identify adjacent trade activities, moving equipment, pinch points, blinded corners, and emergency egress routes.

Implementation: Conducting a 360-Degree Sweep Today

Before starting your first task on the jobsite today:

  1. Perform a 60-Second Circle Check: Stand at your immediate work location and look in a full 360-degree circle. Identify at least one Focus Four hazard in your vicinity and correct it before starting.

  2. Verify Edge and Floor Protection: If working on upper floors, confirm that all floor openings are covered and clearly marked, and that perimeter cables or guardrails are secure.

  3. Inspect Your Path of Travel: Check your walkway between the tool staging area and your work task to ensure it is free of trip hazards, standing water, or trailing electrical cords.
