Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Yesterday, we broke down the stability triangle, boom leverage, and how to read telehandler load charts. Today, we shift focus to one of the highest-risk interactions on any construction jobsite: Ground Crews, Blind Spots, and Pedestrian Safety Around Rough-Terrain Telehandlers. Due to high cab seating, engine enclosures, wide boom assemblies, and rear-wheel steering swing, a telehandler operator’s line of sight is heavily obstructed. Ground workers walking through staging areas or standing near drop zones can easily disappear into a blind spot. Preventing crushed-worker and struck-by incidents requires strict coordination between machine operators and ground personnel.
Navigating Telehandler Blind Spots and Swing Geometry
Operating a multi-ton machine around active trades requires understanding where line-of-sight fails and how the machine moves:
The Right-Side Boom Obstruction: The most severe blind spot on a telehandler is directly to the operator's right side when the boom is lowered or partially raised. The thick steel boom sections and hydraulic cylinders completely block the view of anything at ground level on that side.
Rear Counterweight Tail Swing: Telehandlers utilize rear-wheel steering to achieve tight turning radiuses. When an operator turns the steering wheel, the rear counterweight swings outward aggressively in the opposite direction, creating a severe struck-by and pinch-point hazard for anyone standing alongside the machine.
Suspended Load Obstructions: Carrying large, bulky loads—such as framed wall panels, insulation bundles, or wide masonry carriages—blocks forward vision completely. Operators must travel in reverse or utilize dedicated spotters when forward visibility is obscured by the payload.
The 50-Foot Rule: Never approach an operating telehandler within 50 feet without establishing direct, confirmed eye contact with the operator and receiving a clear signal that the machine is stopped and controls are neutral.
Establishing Safe Ground Operations and Spotter Protocols
Ground workers and telehandler operators must operate as an integrated team using clear communication protocols:
Designate a Dedicated Spotter: When maneuvering in tight spaces, traveling with obstructed forward vision, or landing materials on elevated scaffold decks, use a single designated spotter equipped with high-visibility gear or two-way radio communication.
Standardized Hand Signals: Both operator and spotter must agree on standard hand signals for boom elevation, extension, retraction, tilt, and emergency stops before the lift begins. If the operator loses sight of the spotter for even a second, they must stop all machine movement immediately.
Establish Hard Exclusion Zones: Set up physical barricades or warning tape around the perimeter of elevated landing zones and material staging yards. Uninvolved personnel must be kept clear of the drop zone beneath suspended loads.
Implementation: Ground and Operator Safety Rules Today
Before starting material-handling operations or walking through active equipment yards today:
Maintain Eye Contact: If you are on the ground, never step into a telehandler’s path or tail-swing radius until the operator stops, drops the load, sets the brake, and signals you to cross.
Verify Backup Alarms and Mirrors: Operators must check that clean mirrors, backup cameras (if equipped), and audible reverse alarms are fully functional during their pre-shift walkthrough.
Clear the Drop Zone: Before elevating a pallet or truss package to an upper floor or scaffold deck, confirm that ground crews have completely cleared the area directly beneath the boom and forks.
