Proper Storage: Segregation and Clearance
Welcome back, let's Build Smart & Build Safe! We’ve covered securing the physical cylinder. Today, we address the chemical and fire hazards through strict Segregation and Clearance rules. Mixing incompatible gases or storing them near heat can lead to fire or explosion.
1. Segregation: Separating Fuel from Oxygen
The primary segregation rule is to keep flammable (fuel) gases away from oxidizing gases (like Oxygen).
Fuel Gases (Flammable): Acetylene, Propane, MAPP, Hydrogen.
Oxidizing Gases (Fire Accelerators): Oxygen.
The Rule: Oxygen and fuel gas cylinders must be separated by a minimum of 20 feet of clearance or by a non-combustible barrier that is at least 5 feet high and has a fire rating of at least one-half hour. This separation prevents a small ignition near one type of gas from instantly turning into a catastrophe involving both.
2. Clearance from Heat and Ignition Sources
Cylinders must be protected from anything that could cause the gas pressure to increase or ignite the contents.
Ignition Sources: Keep cylinders away from welding sparks, cutting torches, open flames, electrical apparatus, and smoking areas. The intense heat from these sources can cause the cylinder's internal pressure relief device to fail.
Heat Sources: Never store cylinders near temporary heating units, furnaces, radiators, or steam lines. The elevated temperature can dangerously increase the internal pressure, potentially causing the cylinder to rupture.
Electrical Contact: Cylinders should never be used as a ground for electrical welding circuits. Arcing can damage the cylinder wall and lead to catastrophic failure.
3. Clear Identification
Ensure all cylinders are clearly labeled with the name of the gas they contain. Never rely on the color of the cylinder alone, as colors can fade or vary between suppliers.
Proper segregation and clearance are key administrative controls that prevent chemical interactions and major fire events.
