Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Yesterday, we covered site setup, outrigger stability, and overhead line-of-fire risks during placement. Today, we address an operational hazard that occurs days after the concrete is poured: Reshoring Protocols and Stripping Timelines. The drive to keep a project moving often creates pressure to strip formwork and shores as quickly as possible so materials can be cycled to the next floor. Stripping forms before concrete achieves adequate compressive strength—or removing vertical shores out of sequence—transfers dead loads onto green, uncured slabs, risking structural deflections, micro-cracking, or sudden floor collapses.

The Engineering Behind Stripping and Reshoring

Elevated concrete slabs do not gain their full structural load capacity the moment they turn hard. Concrete curing is a chemical reaction that gains strength over time:

  • Compressive Strength vs. Age: While concrete may feel solid to walk on after 24 to 48 hours, it typically possesses only a fraction of its design strength. Removing structural formwork based on time rather than verified cylinder break strength puts the slab in extreme jeopardy.

  • Form Stripping vs. Reshoring: Form stripping removes the temporary deck panels and joists that shaped the concrete. Reshoring involves placing vertical shores tightly underneath the stripped slab to distribute its dead weight—and the weight of construction loads above—down through multiple lower floors that have achieved full strength.

  • The Chain-Reaction Risk: If shores are stripped out of sequence on a lower level while fresh concrete is being poured on an upper level, the accumulative construction live load can punch straight through the uncured slab, triggering a multi-floor collapse.

 The Verification Rule: Formwork and shores must never be removed based on a guess or a calendar rule of thumb. Stripping or reshoring operations require explicit written authorization from the project engineer or field verification through cured concrete test cylinders.

 Reshoring Sequence and Inspection Standards

To ensure structural stability during form removal and reshoring, field operations must enforce strict engineering controls:

Install reshores immediately as form panels are stripped. Ensure shores are plumb, snugged tight against the slab, and fit with proper mud sills or bearing plates.

Align reshores vertically directly above the shores on the floor below to maintain a continuous, uninterrupted load path down to the foundation.

Implementation: Verifying Curing and Stripping Today

Before stripping any elevated deck panels, wall forms, or vertical shores today:

  1. Check Concrete Break Results: Confirm with the superintendent that field-cured break cylinder results meet the required compressive strength for stripping today's target area.

  2. Follow the Stripping Sequence: Strip forms strictly in the order detailed on the formwork layout drawings. Never drop large sections of shore bracing or remove reshores prematurely to clear space for material storage.

  3. Ensure Vertical Shore Alignment: Walk the reshored floors below active pour decks. Verify that reshores are perfectly plumb and positioned directly over the shore lines beneath them.
