Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Today we launch our focus on Rigging, Hoisting & Crane Line-of-Fire Safety. Every crane pick on a construction site relies entirely on the integrity of the rigging gear connecting the load to the hook. Synthetic web slings, wire rope bridles, alloy chains, and rigging shackles are subjected to high tension, abrasive edges, and heavy dynamic loading. Rigging failure is rarely a minor event—when a sling snaps or a shackle pin fails, thousands of pounds of material drop instantly. Inspecting every piece of rigging gear before it lifts a load is a non-negotiable daily requirement.
Understanding Rigging Degradation and Removal Criteria
Rigging equipment degrades through mechanical wear, improper storage, environmental exposure, and overloading. Riggers and field crews must know the exact rejection criteria for every type of rigging hardware on site:
Synthetic Web Slings: Synthetic slings are highly vulnerable to sharp material edges, chemical exposure, and abrasion. Reject any synthetic sling showing red core warning yarns, surface cuts, snags, punctures, acid or caustic burns, melted or charred fibers, or missing/illegible capacity tags.
Wire Rope Slings: Wire rope fails through metal fatigue, crushing, and corrosion. Remove wire rope slings from service immediately if you find 10 randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay, 5 broken wires in one strand in one lay, severe kinking, crushing, bird-caging, main strand displacement, or heat damage.
Alloy Steel Chain Slings: Chains can hide stress fractures and stretch under heavy loads. Reject chain slings exhibiting cracked or bent links, excessive wear exceeding manufacturer limits at link contact points, gouges, heat discoloration, or stretch that prevents free articulation of the links.
Shackles and Connecting Hardware: Shackles, turnbuckles, and rigging hooks take direct shock loads. Remove hardware showing more than 10% wear in the pin or bow dimensions, visible twists, cracks, bent pins, opened hook throats, or modified components (such as replacing a shackle pin with a standard bolt).
The Identification Rule: Federal safety standards mandate that every sling and rigging component must have a legible, permanently attached capacity tag showing its rated load capacity for various hitch configurations. If the tag is missing or unreadable, the sling is legally scrap—tag it out and destroy it immediately.
Daily Rigging Inspection Protocols
To keep compromised rigging gear off your hoisting hooks, enforce these daily handling and inspection controls:
Pre-Shift Hands-On Inspection: The designated Competent Person or qualified rigger must physically inspect every sling, shackle, hook, and spreader bar before it is used for the first time each shift.
Protect Slings from Sharp Edges: Never wrap synthetic slings or wire rope directly around unpadded sharp steel beams, precast concrete corners, or sharp plate edges. Always use engineered softeners, corner protectors, or cut-resistant pads to prevent edge-cutting under tension.
Immediate Destruction of Rejected Gear: Do not simply throw damaged rigging gear into a trash can where another worker can pull it back out. Cut synthetic slings completely in half, cut wire rope eyes off, and discard damaged hardware into a designated lockable scrap hopper.
Implementation: Auditing Your Rigging Gear Today
Before making your first crane hoist or material lift today:
Inspect Every Tag: Walk your rigging boxes and crane hooks. Confirm that every synthetic sling, wire bridle, and chain assembly has a clear, legible capacity tag attached.
Check Shackle Pins: Inspect all shackles in use today. Ensure all pins are fully threaded, seated flush against the shackle body, and match the original manufacturer specifications. Never use makeshift bolts or rebar as shackle pins.
Use Softeners on Exposed Edges: Verify that rigging crews have softeners or split-pipe corner protectors staged and actively installed between rigging slings and sharp structural material edges.
