Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Today we launch our focus on Head Protection Evolution – Traditional Type 1 vs. Type 2 Safety Helmets. The jobsite hard hat is undergoing its biggest transformation in nearly a century. To understand why the industry is shifting toward modern, climbing-style safety helmets, we first have to look at what the original hard hat was actually designed to do.
From Canvas to High-Density Foam: A Century of Head Protection
The industrial hard hat was born out of combat. Returning from World War I, Edward Bullard adapted his steel "doughboy" helmet into the "Hard Boiled Hat" in 1919 to protect miners from falling rock. Built from steamed canvas, glue, and black paint, this early model was specifically designed to deflect objects dropped directly from above. It became a mandatory safety requirement for the first time during the construction of the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1930s.
For the next 90 years, the design shifted to fiberglass and high-density plastics, but the core engineering remained identical: a rigid shell with an internal suspension web designed solely to absorb a top-down impact. Today, the hazards have evolved. Workers are highly mobile, navigating complex elevated decks, dealing with swinging crane loads, and facing slip-and-fall hazards where the head strikes the ground laterally.
Type 1 vs. Type 2: Top-Only vs. Multi-Directional Impact
Many companies treat traditional hard hats as universal head protection, but the physics of modern construction accidents expose the limitations of the traditional design. The ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 standard divides head protection into two distinct categories:
Type 1 (Top Impact Only): The traditional suspension hard hat. It is engineered and tested to reduce the force of an impact strictly to the top of the head. It provides almost zero lateral protection. If a steel beam swings into the side of a worker’s head, or if they trip and strike the back of their head against a concrete column, a Type 1 hat offers minimal shock absorption.
Type 2 (Multi-Directional Impact): The modern industrial safety helmet. Instead of just a webbing suspension, Type 2 helmets utilize a high-density EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam liner—similar to a motorcycle or rock-climbing helmet. This liner absorbs and dissipates impact energy from the top, front, back, and sides.
The True Hazard Rule: Struck-by-falling-object incidents account for only a fraction of jobsite head injuries. The majority of traumatic brain injuries in construction result from slips, trips, and falls where the worker's head violently strikes a lateral surface. Type 2 helmets are engineered exactly for this reality.
Implementation: Inspecting Your Head Protection Today
Before you step onto the active site today:
Check the ANSI Rating: Take off your hard hat, flip it over, and look at the molded stamp or manufacturer sticker inside the shell. Verify whether you are wearing a Type 1 or Type 2 helmet.
Inspect the Suspension or Foam Liner: If you wear a Type 1 hat, ensure the suspension webbing is not frayed and the clips are fully seated. If you wear a Type 2 helmet, inspect the foam liner for any dents, cracks, or crushing—foam that has absorbed an impact must be retired immediately.
Evaluate Your Daily Task: If your work today involves elevated platforms, confined spaces with low clearances, or working near swinging crane loads, consider whether your current head protection matches the directional hazards you face.
