Welcome back, let’s Build Smart & Build Safe! Today we launch our focus on Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) and Chemical Safety Basics. Construction sites run on chemicals: paints, solvents, form release oils, sealants, adhesives, fuels, and concrete treatments. While these products are essential for daily work, every chemical brought onto a jobsite carries health or physical risks. The Hazard Communication Standard is built on a simple principle: you have a legal right to know what chemicals you are working with and how to protect yourself from exposure.
Understanding Jobsite Chemical Hazards
Chemical hazards fall into two major categories: physical hazards and health hazards. Failing to recognize how a product behaves can lead to sudden fires or long-term health issues.
Physical Hazards: These are products that cause immediate mechanical or chemical reactions. Examples include flammable liquids like gasoline or acetone, combustible gases like propane, reactive agents, and compressed gas cylinders. Mismanaging these products leads to fires, explosions, or rapid pressure releases.
Health Hazards: These are products that damage human tissue upon exposure. Health hazards can cause immediate acute effects—such as chemical burns from concrete form release or skin irritation from solvents—or chronic long-term effects like organ damage or respiratory disease from prolonged exposure to toxic vapors.
Routes of Entry: Chemical hazards enter the human body through four primary routes: inhalation (breathing in dusts or vapors), absorption (soaking through the skin or eyes), ingestion (swallowing chemical residue from unwashed hands while eating or smoking), and injection (puncture wounds from high-pressure sprayers).
The Right to Know Rule: Federal safety regulations require employers to identify every hazardous chemical on site, maintain a complete chemical inventory, provide accessible Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and train workers on proper handling before exposure occurs.
The Three Pillars of Jobsite Chemical Safety
Managing chemical exposures requires relying on three primary hazard communication tools every day:
GHS Chemical Labels: Every chemical container arriving on site must have an intact Globally Harmonized System (GHS) label showing product identifiers, signal words, hazard statements, and hazard pictograms.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Standardized 16-section documents that outline everything about a chemical, including its health hazards, required personal protective equipment (PPE), handling precautions, and first-aid measures.
Written HAZCOM Plan: A site-specific program detailing how chemicals are inventoried, stored, labeled, and managed on the jobsite.
Implementation: Checking Your Chemical Inventory Today
Before using any chemical, solvent, or fuel product on the jobsite today:
Check for an Intact Label: Inspect every chemical container before picking it up. Verify that the original manufacturer label is attached, legible, and undamaged.
Know Where the SDS is Located: Confirm you know where the site SDS binders or digital portal are located so you can quickly review chemical safety information before starting a task.
Practice Hand Hygiene Before Breaks: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, drinking, or smoking to eliminate chemical ingestion risks.
