The P.A.S.S. Method

Welcome back, let's Build Smart & Build Safe! We’ve covered fire classes and how to inspect an extinguisher. Today is the most practical lesson of the week: how to use a fire extinguisher effectively and safely using the easy-to-remember P.A.S.S. method.

You should only attempt to fight a fire if it is small, contained (e.g., in a trash can), you have the correct extinguisher, and your escape route is clear. If the fire is growing or the smoke is thick, evacuate immediately!

The P.A.S.S. Method

The P.A.S.S. acronym provides the four critical steps for operating an extinguisher:

P - Pull the Pin

  • Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointed away from you.

  • Pull the safety pin. This breaks the plastic tamper seal and arms the unit, allowing you to discharge the agent.

A - Aim at the Base

  • Crouch low and aim the nozzle at the base of the fire—where the fuel is.

  • Do NOT aim at the flames or smoke; the fire will not go out until the fuel source is cooled or smothered.

S - Squeeze the Handle

  • Stand approximately 6 to 8 feet away.

  • Squeeze the handle to begin discharging the extinguishing agent. If you release the handle, the discharge will stop.

S - Sweep Side-to-Side

  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire until the fire is extinguished.

  • Watch the area carefully. If the fire re-ignites, repeat the P.A.S.S. sequence.

Stay Safe: The Escape Route

While fighting a fire, always keep your back to an unobstructed exit or escape route. If the extinguisher runs out, or if the fire begins to spread uncontrollably, you must be able to leave safely and immediately.

Tomorrow, on Fall Protection Friday, we'll discuss the specific fire hazards involved with working at height.
