Full Brim Safety: Build Smart, Build Safe

Vibration, Cold & Hand-Arm Protection
Welcome back, let's Build Smart & Build Safe! We’ve covered safe lifting and posture. Today, we focus on specialized, cumulative threats to your hands and arms: vibration and cold exposure.
These hazards can lead to long-term nerve damage, loss of dexterity, and severe circulatory issues, yet they are often overlooked in daily safety talks.
The Silent Threat: Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV)
Using powerful vibrating tools like jackhammers, concrete breakers, and even certain sanders can lead to Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), which includes "Vibration White Finger" (a circulatory issue).
Limit Exposure: The most effective defense is reducing the time you spend using high-vibration tools. Utilize task rotation and take micro-breaks to warm and stretch your hands.
Use the Right Tools: Whenever possible, use modern tools designed with vibration dampening technology.
Anti-Vibration Gloves: Use certified anti-vibration gloves. Important: These gloves must be properly rated; standard work gloves offer little to no protection against tool vibration.
The Danger of Cold Hands
Cold weather poses a significant ergonomic risk, even if you are not working with specialized tools.
Reduced Dexterity: Cold stiffens muscles, reduces nerve sensation, and dramatically decreases your dexterity, making simple tasks more difficult and increasing the risk of a slipping tool or a sudden, painful strain.
The Solution: Use gloves appropriate for the cold that still allow you to grip safely. Take frequent breaks in a warm area to restore circulation and warm your muscles. Never handle metal tools or materials bare-handed in freezing temperatures.
Protecting your hands and arms from vibration and cold is essential for maintaining your ability to work safely and efficiently for your entire career.
Tomorrow, on Fall Protection Friday, we'll connect ergonomic principles to fall prevention.
